Last July 30, OpenSSH ftp distribution was trojaned! (See the ISS advisory and the OpenSSH advisory on this topic). According to Jon Lasser, Unix columnist at SecurityFocus, it is time for Open-Source to grow up by getting quickly pragmatic about package verification. Lasser proposes to use the X.509 certificates as a standard for package integrity checking.

Late thoughts

Some of the things I found hard when I'm blogging:

to express my opinion in a decent english (I know this is not always the case... :-). Yup, this is not my mother tongue.
to choose the most relevant piece of text when quotting, which is not that evident.
to remember all the thoughts of the day. Carramba, I'm loosing most of my ideas when sitting in front of this bloody screen. However, the output of the idea/day is quite high... no comment
to choose the most appropriate title. For example, I must say I'm not particularly happy with the one I choose for this little piece of text.
to find the most suitable words to be used inside a link.

The last point may sound a bit ridiculous but looks very important to me. To avoid some Google time bomb mechanisms, it is important, when liniking, to avoid the use of words which are not significant for the link.

For example, if you wanna say that OpenBSD Journal has an interesting story about the [G.O.B.I.E] project which aims to develop a GUI installer for OpenBSD, it is better to link like that:

The correct way of linking has two more advantages compared to the wrong way. First, the words in the link are almost the title of the story (which is actually: OpenBSD GUI Installer Project ). By doing so, you respect the work of the author of the distant document. Next, the important words in your sentence are emphasized by the link's color and underlining. You then get more legibility. Bingo!

I found this belgian job opportunity. There is a funny thing here. I have read the description very carefully, particularly the Client section. It is clear to me that the client described a company I know quite well. Let's call it foobar belgium.
Is that so funny ? Not yet.

Foobar belgium is my current employer. That is why I know quite well what is related to this company. That said, go back to the description of the opportunity. The offer section clearly states that you will also benefit from tailored training plan and the opportunity to develop a challenging career. The point is that all the appointed trainings for the staff within foobar belgium have been canceled 6 month ago. It has been clearly stated by the management that for the moment there is not a single buck for the trainings because of the financial situation of
Foobar. And this situation is still running now without any new official statement that it will change soon...

When the web will miss the fun

Today I intended to talk about the Google challenge, website that I found yesterday. The idea of the so called challenge was barely simple. Once a week, two words were given. Each blogger affiliated to the Google challenge had to make an entry into his blog using this 2 words. A week later, a search was made on Google using the two given words as search keywords. The winners was the first affiliate blog which appeared into the google results.

Unfortunatly, one cannot laugh at everything. The most sarcastic thing in this story is that you can still use the Google's cache to see a bit of the Google challenge home page.

I really miss these days where the web was a little bit less commercial and a little bit more funny.

Oooops!

Google enables you to save certain search preferences, including the number of results to show per page, the interface language, and whether or not to use SafeSearch filtering. Google's SafeSearch allows you to block web pages containing explicit sexual content from appearing in search results. You can filter both explicit text and explicit images or filter explicit images only (which is the default behavior) or not filter your search results at all.

I have not done anything particular for that, but if you look for "Deep Throat linda lovelace picture" and if you did not change the default filtering behavior of Google, guess who's the first search result to come...

Promote OpenBSD with cybersex

On one side, and according to the stats of this site, sex is driving most of the traffic to this site, mainly people looking for free pictures, often of Linda Boreman.

On the other side, I strongly believe that OpenBSD deserve more audiance and publicity. For example, I'm not able to find 3 belgian companies that are working with OpenBSD boxes. IMO, this is mainly due to the lack of knowledge of the product and philosophy.

So, my idea is to go on talking about hot topics to drive some visitors to this site and to settle a new habit: try to provide one OpenBSD related link of the week. The final purpose is to promote this great operating system and his community.

Linux Wins the Latest Google Count. The idea is rather simple... you go to Google, you type a word as a search keyword and you see how many match are found (on the top, at the right end of the blue line). According to this piece of news, Linux wins with 47,100,000 entries against 43,800,000 for Windows.

Note that windows is a common word, meaning that you'll have pages that have the word windows having nothing to do with the M$ Os. So it seems that the Internet talks somehow more of Linux than of Windows.

I did the same with FreeBSD and OpenBSD and the results are respectively 4,720,000 and 1,470,000. Python is 3,530,000.
